Video testing

This weekend it's the Red Bull Air Race at Ascot Racecourse and for several days this week we've been treated to some practice flying by the Spanish pilot Juan Velarde. I'd stood in the garden to record a video on my iPhone but the results were somewhat disappointing. Since my normal Nikon camera will also shoot video I thought I'd give that a try. I've not really used it for video previously because it's a whole new world and skill set from that of taking still portrait photographs. The results however were much improved over the iPhone, if a little shaky. What I hadn't realised is that when you upload a video to YouTube, it's smart enough to recognise your shaky camera work and can auto-stabilize the results. So what you see above is vastly improved over the original. The video is shot in HD which got me wondering what kind of still image I can pull from it. I've been reading some online tutorials on the best way to pull a still image from a video so once I've suitably educated myself I'll give it a go and blog the result.
